Why Your Child Can Read "Because" but Not "Bat"
Here's a scene a lot of parents know well. Your child reads "because," "people," and "friend" without even slowing down - words with silent letters, weird vowel teams, no logic to them at all. Then you hand them a picture book with the word "bat" in it, three plain letters, and they freeze. Guess. Look at the picture instead. Say "ball" with total confidence.
It feels backwards. The hard word was easy and the easy word was hard. If you've quietly wondered whether something is wrong, there isn't - your child has just shown you, very precisely, which of the two different skills that make up "reading" is solid and which one isn't built yet.
Almost everything marketed to parents calls this one thing: reading practice, sight words, phonics, sounding it out - the terms get used interchangeably. They're not. They're two different jobs the brain has to learn to do, and a child can be strong at one and behind on the other without it showing up anywhere except moments exactly like this one.

Question 1 - Decoding
Say a made-up word out loud, like "zub" or "tarv." Ask your child to sound it out.
Can't sound it out? Phonics/decoding is the gap.
Question 2 - Sight words
Show a common irregular word on its own, like "said" or "they." Ask your child to read it instantly, no sounding out.
Hesitates or guesses? Sight-word recognition is the gap.

Two skills wearing one name
Phonics, or decoding, is, in the words of Reading Rockets, using "letter-sound relationships to translate a printed word into speech." Sounding it out, in other words. Your child breaks bat into its three sounds and glues them back together: /b/ /a/ /t/ → bat. It's clunky at first and then, for most kids, it isn't - and it's the only skill that works on a word they've genuinely never seen before, made-up ones included.
Sight-word recognition plays by different rules. A small set of very common English words - said, was, they, of - simply refuse to follow the letter-sound logic above. Sound out "of" the way you'd sound out "if," and you get the wrong word. There's no decoding your way there; the word has to be recognized on sight, instantly, the way you recognize a friend's face. We go deep on the mechanics of that in why sight words are so much harder than they look - the short version is that the brain uses something called orthographic mapping to store them, and even that process leans on phonics for whatever part of the word is regular.
So: decoding handles new words and regular ones. Sight-word memory handles old, common, irregular ones. Open any real picture book and you'll find both on the same page, sometimes the same sentence.
Why one without the other stalls out
Here's the surprising part. Sight-word memorization, on its own, doesn't actually work. Reading Rockets doesn't hedge on this - "the practice of memorizing lists of words will not lead to a sight word vocabulary if it is not paired with the teaching of phonics and phonemic awareness."
Think about why. Even a genuinely irregular word like said is mostly regular - the s and the d behave exactly the way phonics says they should, and only that middle vowel sound breaks rank. Locking the word in for instant recall means using ordinary letter-sound knowledge for the regular parts, and treating only the odd little irregular piece as something to memorize on its own. A child with shaky decoding doesn't have that letter-sound scaffolding to hang the word on yet. So the whole thing gets memorized as a meaningless shape instead - closer to a phone number than a word. It's a heavier lift, it fades faster, and worst of all, it doesn't transfer: cracking "said" this way teaches a child nothing about how to crack "says" next week.
Which is why a child stuck on Question 2 above often has a Question 1 problem hiding underneath it. Decoding isn't a rival method to sight-word practice. It's closer to the foundation the second skill gets poured on top of.
